Treatment of pharmaceutical residues in the Pitkäniemi wastewater treatment plant, Lohja municipality
Background:
Active pharmaceutical substances contribute to the spread of difficult-to-degrade chemical substances in the environment. As a result of our societies increased use of medications, large number of pharmaceutical residues is transferred to treatment plants via public sewers and will eventually end up in our groundwater, lakes and seas if not treated first.
One of the main goals of the pilot project is to map the total quantity of pharmaceutical residues that occurs in the sewage and the treatment plant and to define how much of these is released in Lohjanjarvi.
In the initial phase of the pilot, a feasibility study is carried out by Mellifiq with eight sample analysis which is required for the feasibility study. The first results of the study are obtained, showing the amount of residues in the inlet and outlet as well as the preliminary purification effects where we test both granular activated carbon and ozone, separately and in combination.
The pilot project will run for about one and a half years. An analysis of their respective purification effect will be tested at the beginning, middle and at the end of the operating time.
Pilot scale treatment plant in Lohja is in operation and planned to be completed by Q1 of 2021.
